Ex-Kano LG Chairman Returns To Tailoring Following Election Defeat

 

Abdullahi Gali Shitu, also known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, is a former chairman of Kano State's Kumbotso Local Government Area who has returned to tailoring after losing the election.

According to KohlorsMedia, Basaf, who served as chairman of Kumbotso LGA until March 2026, told the Daily Trust that he preferred to return to tailoring since it provides more stability than politics.

He stated that politicians should have a sustaining trade and see politics as a chance to help people rather than a full-time job.

"Tailoring is not a minor trade. It is a major one. It supports livelihoods. Even in politics, my tailoring business provided financial support for my campaigns and causes. Without it, it would have been hard to continue political activity," he stated.

Basaf currently has approximately twenty apprentices working for him.

"My ambition is to modernize tailoring, start a clothing company, and hire fifty or more people. "I want to contribute to the economy," he stated.

The former LG chair stated that his return to tailoring is deliberate.

He stated that he wants young people to see dignity in trades.

"My message is that people should not detest trades, but rather appreciate and modernize them," he stated.

"Value your trade over politics because it supports you and allows you to fund your political activity," he suggested.

Basaf stated that despite having Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Political Science, as well as a network that will allow him to land more suitable white-collar jobs, he chose to return to tailoring because it has always been his passion, and he wants to take it to the next level and have a greater impact on society.

"Tailoring is a magnificent vocation, even greater than political position," he stated.

His objective, he says, is to develop a clothing company that can compete with manufacturers in other countries.

"Politics may shift overnight. You can be at the office today and out tomorrow. However, tailoring remains. It feeds you, provides for your family, and enables you to serve others," he explained.
