For Igbo leaders outside of the Southeast, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has outlawed the contentious Eze Ndigbo moniker and substituted Onyendu Ndigbo.

32 Onyendu Ndigbo leaders from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Ghana, and other places were inaugurated by Ohanaeze on Monday in Owerri, Imo State.

Any Onyendu leader who violates integrity norms would forfeit their title and certificate, according to Eze Emmanuel Okeke, chairman of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers.

Igbo leaders outside of the South-East will no longer use the contentious Eze Ndigbo title, according to Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, which has also declared that the new Onyendu Ndigbo title will take its place.

According to KohlorsMedia, the decision was announced on Monday in Owerri, Imo State, at the inauguration of the first group of 32 Onyendu Ndigbo leaders and the admission of diaspora leaders.

Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Ghana, and other places were among the places where the recently inducted leaders were chosen.

According to Ohanaeze, the modification was made in order to put a stop to the protracted conflicts between Igbo groups outside and within Nigeria on the Eze Ndigbo title.

According to Charles Odunukwe, chairman of the Committee on the Regularization of Igbo Diaspora Traditional Title and Leadership, anyone in charge of Igbo people living outside of their ancestral homeland will now hold the Onyendu title or any other title authorized following discussions with the Council of Ndieze and Ime-Obi.

He also mentioned that it was officially forbidden for diaspora leaders to utilize the Eze Igbo or Eze Ndigbo title.

Another group of diaspora leaders were formally inducted into the position of Onyendu Ndigbo during the event by Eze Emmanuel Okeke, the Chairman of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers.

According to him, the exercise was a part of continuous attempts to give Igbo communities outside of the Southeast a more structured and reliable leadership structure.

Okeke advised the recently appointed leaders to act honorably and truthfully. He reminded them that the role entails a lot of responsibility and advised them to stay away from corruption and bad leadership.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude to Senator John Azuka Mbata and the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide for their support of the project.

The traditional ruler threatened to revoke both the title and the certificate awarded during the induction if a leader did not live up to the expected standards.
